A Love Affair with Life

Falling in Love Beyond Romance

Falling in Love

[Dedicated to my good friend and brother from Freetown]

My friend has been asking me:
when will you write a love poem?
I want to hear how you fall in love.
I want to see your words dipped
in the exquisite nature of falling love.

I felt misunderstood.
I feel so very much in love.
I fall in love each day again and again
with the nuances of life
with glimpses of nature, animals and humans.

Oh, I am such a big lover of life.
I am in love with so many things
that falling in what we call romantic love
though it would be nice
sounds like just one note
in the symphony
of love that awakens in me
day after day.

Friend,
look at me.
This is me, loving.
This is me ,being in love.
This is me, falling and flowing in love
I am drunk in love
with all the bits and pieces
that I can make love of.

Dear Friends,

Romance is beautiful, but love, for me, is something far more expansive than a need I attach to another person.
Falling in love isn’t tied to a single moment or period. Love is an ever-present, boundless force that colors everything I see. Each day, I fall in love over and over: with the textures and rhythms of the world, with its small, miraculous details. Love, in its richest form, flows through us as naturally as breathing. It is a continuous immersion in life’s details and possibilities, a daily romance with the world itself.

If Love was a Song, …

… romance would be a thrilling note—but just one in a symphony of sounds and harmonies. Romantic love is powerful, yet there is so much more to love than that single, resonant chord. The song of life is composed of endless variations: compassion, wonder, friendship, hope, joy, and empathy. Each of these is a note that, together, creates a beautiful, layered composition. The symphony of love is one we conduct within ourselves, adding and harmonizing new sounds as we live and grow.

Love as a Daily Practice

It is said that love is not just a feeling, but a commitment. In that sense, I choose to fall in love every day. Some days, I “fall” more easily than others but each day I actively orient myself towards falling in love with life over and over again.
To live this way is to practice a daily devotion. Often, it’s not grand or earth-shattering –  it’s quiet, like a soft hum beneath the surface. It’s an art of being awake, choosing to be tender, curious, and open with life itself.
For me, love has become a way of looking at the world, an intentional refusal to let beauty pass unnoticed. Love isn’t something I give to others only to receive it in return—it’s something I cultivate within myself, an ongoing relationship with all that is.

You Don’t Need to Carry My Heart

When we rely on others to complete our sense of love, we create a dependency that can make love feel fragile. But when we realize that love is something we can generate and hold within, it transforms. We become less focused on who or what loves us back and more on how fully we can love. I fall in love not by giving others the responsibility to carry my heart, but by trusting that I am already whole, that love is an endless resource I can share without losing any of it.

This Is Me, Loving

To my dear friend who asked for a love poem, I say, “Look at me. This is me loving.” I may not always be singing of a lover’s embrace, but I am always falling and flowing in love. I am moved by the world in ways that words can barely capture. Each day, I am spellbound by life’s details, held captive by the grandeur and simplicity of life, by the endless pieces I can fall for and make love of. This love is not borrowed or outsourced—it’s an unbreakable connection with life itself.
This is my love story. And maybe, just maybe, that is enough. It certainly feels like that way.

Love,

Rose

Prompts for Reflection:

  • How would you describe the feeling of being “in love” with life?

  • If you viewed everything around you as a work of art, what would you notice that you haven’t noticed before?

  • When was the last time you felt truly in awe of something? What does that moment reveal about what you love?
