LET YOUR FRIENDS TAKE CARE OF YOU
Let your friends take care of you.
I am talking about the friends
who silently surround you.
I am talking about the warm cup of coffee
that sits with you whenever you want.
The morning robe that embraces you
as soon as you step out of the bed.
The light that comes in through the veranda door
as if it invites you out to play.
The door lock, that clicks open when you introduce the key
and welcomes you home.
The worn slippers that know the exact shape of your feet.
The shower that refreshes your body and takes away your thoughts.
The creme that gently spreads over your skin.
The living room couch that exudes cozy comfort
The books on the shelf that say: “We have stories to tell you.”
The pages in the journal that patiently listen to whatever you have to say.
The warm, soft blanket that hugs you tenderly.
The night that whispers: “Come darling.
Rest, it is late. Relax, and I promise: tomorrow is another day.”
Look at all those friends.
I could not name them all.
And I have not even started to speak about
the birds, the squirrels, the bumble bees, the dogs, and cats,
the stones, the leaves, the rivers, the mountains.
The sun.
The water.
The air.
And the rain that taps on the window.
Let your friends take care of you.
Silently. Lovingly.
Again, and again.
Let them love on you.

Reflecting on my “silent friends” - those constant, quiet souces of comfort around me - helps me recongize the simple, meaningful supports available at any time. It anchors me in the moment and in gratitude for what is. I’ve noticed that the more I give attention to these friends, the more I can see them in everything around me, and this awareness brings so much beauty into my life.
PROMPTS FOR REFLECTION
I am offering a few prompts for reflection on recognizing, appreciating and cultivating your “silent friends”.
AWARENESS: Recognizing Your Silent Friends
What are your everyday “silent friends” that bring you comfort without you noticing. Consider both physical objects and intangible forces, like light or air. How do they make your life feel easier, magical and more meaningful?
APPRECIATION: Gratitude for the Small Things
How can noticing your “silent friends” bring more gratitude into your daily routine?
ACTION: Nurturing your silent friends
In what ways can you create more space in your life to appreciate the subtle, supportive moments around you? What simple actions or routines could you embrace to allow yourself to feel more cared for by the world?
READING SUGGESTION:
If you’re interested in exploring how the attention to small things greatly beautifies and enriches life, I recommend reading ’s piece, “To make a snow angle on a stranger’s grave”. You’ll find an inspiring “bucket list” of Andrea’s biggest tiniest dreams including:
- “To sing high notes of a song that has no high notes.”
- “To cry joy into my own chest.”
- “To water a friend’s begonia back to life while they’re out of town.”
QUOTES:
“May you realize that you are never alone, that your soul in its brightness and belonging connects you intimately with the rhythm of the universe.” John O’Donohue
“In the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.” Khalil Gibran

Rose,
This is such a comforting poem and a blessed reminder to be grateful for these 'silent friends' as we so often take them for granted. I love that you mention Andrea Gibson's post as I read it earlier this week and LOVED it!
Blessings ~Wendy💜
